William C Magee, age 81, passed away on December 24th, 2023 after a long and difficult battle with congestive heart failure.
He was born on October 30th, 1942, a son of George and Lucille (Jenner) Magee. Bill was raised in Meadville with his only sibling, Nancy Sherwood. He attended 1st District Elementary where he met his childhood best friend Ronnie Shea at age 5. Bill played little league and Babe Ruth league baseball. He attended Meadville High School (MHS) where he played varsity baseball and trumpet in the band. He also played keyboard in a band, Ronnie and The Crystals. He met his high school heart throb, Dreama Patrick, at MHS prior to graduating in 1960. Bill attended Edinboro University of PA (1964) where he earned his teaching degree as well as his master’s in education. Bill played in a men’s softball league with his other childhood best friend, Bobby Gilmore in his 20s.
Bill married Dreama in 1968. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past summer. Bill and Dreama could jitterbug like no other. They found so much joy together in listening to music (especially Jimmy Buffett), taking long car rides around Conneaut Lake and the Erie peninsula as well as visiting with their friends. They found even greater joy together in spending time with their family including 4 children: Dr Terry (Kathy) Magee, Kelly (Scott) Buck , Greg Magee (Robyn Shelor) and Kristi (Ed) Kulisek; 8 Grandchildren: Matthew (Leah) Buck, Tyler (Erin) Magee, Marissa Wills (Todd Szawara) , Katy Magee, Karlee Buck, Emily Magee, Jack Welch and Addison Welch; 3 Great Grandchildren: Elizabeth Magee, Taysom Szawara and Walker Buck.
Bill was a beloved educator at Conneaut Lake High School (CLHS) for 37+ years where he taught history and geography. He coached many athletes at CLHS in baseball, basketball and football and was even a cheerleading advisor. (And yes, Dad… cheerleaders are athletes!) Bill’s passion for athletics led him to his most cherished role of Athletic Director at CLHS.
Bill was a member of the District 10 Committee for over 30 years. He served as the baseball tournament director for 20 years. He was the editor of both the calendar and newsletter of District 10 and held the position of Sergeant at Arms during his entire tenure. He worked as a game manager for hundreds and hundreds of PIAA District 10 and PIAA Interdistrict Championship games in the sports of football, basketball, baseball and softball. Bill assisted with the sales of merchandise at Cross Country and Track and Field championship events. He was well known by PIAA playoff officials as the man who greeted and provided a safe environment to officials during playoff games. He was also a member of the District 10 Athletic Directors Association and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association.
Bill held many part time jobs over the years as a probation officer, swim instructor to 100s of kids in chilly summer mornings in Conneaut Lake, several managerial roles ranging from the East side waterslides, hotel/restaurant, beer distributor, driving range… and on and on. Did you know that Bill was a mega Cleveland sports fan to the Browns & the Indians, massive Ohio State Football fan, Manhattan cocktail lover, colorful storyteller, snake hater, and a human GPS?
Bill made his way to heaven on Christmas Eve. We’re certain he was decked out in his Browns gear after the Christmas Eve win as he met Bobby Gilmore (donning his Steelers jersey) at the Pearly Gates.
Special thanks to the many doctors, nurses, and nurses’ aides at UPMC Hamot that took special care of Bill for the past 2 months.
