William Heard, Sr., age 103, of Erie, transitioned peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at UPMC Hamot Hospital. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Willie and Annie Mae Heard.
A proud veteran, William served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. Following his service, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a Postal Supervisor with the United States Postal Service.
William embraced life with passion, joy, and faith. A devoted sports enthusiast, he was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and an avid reader of the Erie Times-News, which he enjoyed daily from cover to cover. His commitment to staying active was truly inspiring—he played tennis and continued exercising well into his centennial years. Known for his impeccable sense of style, William took pride in being sharply dressed for every occasion. His civic engagement was also remarkable, as he was recognized in the Hall of Fame as one of Pennsylvania’s oldest voters. Above all, William loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Saint James A.M.E. Church, where he served in many capacities, including as an Emeritus Trustee.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ione Wilson Heard. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Rebecca Harris and William Heard, Jr. (Sheryll), both of Virginia Beach, VA; his granddaughter, Danielle Davis-Williams (Tarif) of Sandy Springs, GA; along with a host of extended family and friends who will continue to honor and celebrate his extraordinary legacy.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Saint James A.M.E. Church, 236 E 11th St, Erie, PA 16503. A Homegoing Celebration will be held at the church on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens.
