Russell V. Madonia, Sr., age 91 of Erie PA., devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Russell was born September 6,1933 in Erie, PA. He was the only child of the late Ross and Mildred (Fiorita) Madonia.
Russell graduated from Cathedral Prep High School in 1951 and Gannon University in 1955 where he participated in the ROTC program. Following graduation from Gannon, Russell joined the US Army as a second lieutenant. After completing his active duty in the Army, Russell stayed enlisted in the US Army Reserve and National Guard for nearly thirty years, retiring at the rank of Captain. After his active duty in the Army, Russell worked for the US Postal Service for 38 years retiring as supervisor. In “retirement”, Russell worked at the Erie Times Newspaper for 20 years where he had many friends and fond memories. A devout Catholic, Russell was baptized and a long time member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In recent years Russell was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his son Paul Madonia.
Russell is survived by his wife Catilda (Pirrello) Madonia, sons Russell Madonia, Jr. (Jill) of Longboat Key, FL and St. Charles, MO, Michael Madonia (Stacey) of Erie, PA, daughter Julie Zachrich (Richard) of San Marcos, CA and daughter-in-law Mary Beth Madonia of Aurora, OH. Russell is also survived by grandchildren Paige, Carey, Nick, Camille, Andrea, Gabe, Nathaniel, Michael and Maggie.
Friends are invited to call on Monday, May 5, 2025 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 3801 W.38th St. from 9:30 am until 10:30 am at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Section 33, on Tuesday, May 6th at 10:00 am.
