Robert “Bob” W. Boyd, age 84, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Born on June 16, 1941, in Grove City, Pennsylvania, Bob was the beloved son of the late Willard and Bessie Theresa Wesley Boyd. From an early age, Bob displayed remarkable talent and discipline that would define his life. A gifted drummer, he began teaching lessons at a local music store in Grove City and performed with the world-renowned Plaidettes, including an appearance at the World’s Fair—an accomplishment he carried with quiet pride.
Bob’s dedication and drive were evident early on when he became the youngest boy in Mercer County to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, achieving this honor on November 25, 1954, at just 13 years old. He went on to graduate from Grove City High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Grove City College, and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine.
Following graduation, Bob proudly served two years in the Dental Corps at Fort Stewart Air Force Base in New York. He later returned to Erie and opened his dental practice on West Lake Road in Millcreek, where he built a career rooted in service, precision, and genuine care for others. Bob took immense pride in his work and was known for his punctuality—often saying, “No one waits in my waiting room!” He faithfully practiced dentistry for more than 50 years before retiring in April of 2017.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Jane Sloan Boyd, in 2001, and by his son, Robert Justin Boyd, in 2015.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Linda Doutt McFarland; stepchildren Amanda (Nate) Kimmy and Justin McFarland (Cortney Becker); and cherished grandchildren Chance Kimmy, Clay Kimmy, Ashlynn Kimmy, Madison (Robert) Sanford, Benjamin McFarland, and Maxwell McFarland.
He is also survived by dear and devoted friends who became family. His longtime roommate, colleague, best man, and steadfast friend, Dr. Rudane “Rod” Shultz (Patty), shared decades of friendship and professional respect. Bob was also deeply grateful for Kathy Falbo, his dental assistant of 41 years, who began working with him at just 17 years old. Kathy stood faithfully by Bob’s side through life’s many chapters, sharing each workday and becoming an irreplaceable part of both his practice and his life.
Bob’s love for his two dogs who passed, Maggie and Tilly, and his surviving dog, Rhiannon, was evident to anyone who visited.
Bob will be remembered for his discipline, dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to excellence—qualities that touched the lives of his family, patients, colleagues, and friends alike.
