Robert (Rob) Michael DeFonzo Jr., beloved father, devoted family member, and gifted writer, joined our Lord on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the age of 58. Born on June 4, 1967, to Robert (Bob) and Anita (Evanoff) DeFonzo Sr. Rob was the youngest of two children.

After graduating from McDowell High School in 1984, Rob headed south to Florida. He embraced the friendships, adventures, and experiences that shaped him. His love for Erie never faded, and he eventually returned home, where he chose to stay. Many will remember his smiling face behind the bar at Lefty’s or The Elephant Bar, making sure everyone had a drink in hand and a laugh to share.

Rob’s life was a journey of exploration. He tried his hand at different jobs, each reflecting his curiosity and openness to new experiences. His favorite role was as an independent contractor for the Erie Times News, where he spent years as a sports writer. Whatever the work, Rob approached it with dedication, reliability, and kindness.

Those who received one of his handwritten notes, letters, or cards knew they were cherished. Rob had a gift with words, often expressing heartfelt thoughts on paper that he didn’t always say aloud. A lifelong Philadelphia Flyers fan, he cheered passionately, sometimes loudly, for his team, finding joy in every season and sharing that enthusiasm with those around him.

He loved the outdoors, often basking in the sun and soaking up its warmth. Athletic by nature, he excelled in nearly every sport he tried, especially hockey. More than anything, he loved helping his family and friends whenever they needed him.

Above all else, Rob cherished his family. He adored his son, Justin, and took immense pride in the man he became. Of all his accomplishments, Justin was his greatest joy. Rob’s love touched every corner of his family’s life, bringing them immeasurable happiness. He was often found on the floor playing with the children, giving them his undivided attention and making each one feel truly special. Ever the family prankster, he filled gatherings with light, laughter, and mischief, leaving behind a tremendous void in the hearts of all who loved him.

Rob will be remembered for his generous spirit, his kindness to everyone fortunate enough to know him, his humble demeanor, and the love he gave so freely. His family will forever miss his presence but will carry his passion for writing, his laughter, and his love in their hearts.

He is survived by his son, Justin DeFonzo (Jessica Smolen) of Temple Terrace, Florida; his mother, Anita (Evanoff) DeFonzo of Erie; his sister, Sharon (Neil) Wolfgang of Erie; his niece, Amy Kelso (Kaley Cole) of Venango; his great nephew, Tristan of Venango; as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert (Bob) DeFonzo Sr., and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

At the family’s request, services will be private. Rob will be laid to rest alongside his father and other family members at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Burton Quinn-Scott Cremation and Funeral Services or to NAMI Erie County PA.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share memories and honor the extraordinary person he was.
