Richard S. Hodges

Richard S. Hodges, originally from Somerville, MA passed away with his family near, on June 22, 2025.

Rich, along with his business partner, Elaine Reed, opened Gem City Dinor in the spring of 2019. With a culinary history that followed him from Chicago, Rich made his mark at iconic Erie restaurants, such as the Stonehouse Inn, Avanti’s and Syd’s Place, before establishing his own restaurant.

He was beloved by so many, greeting everyone with a warm smile and a kind word that left a lasting impression. He was joyous. His sense of humor, his drive to seek beauty and his inexplicable knack to find the perfect gift are merely footnotes to the qualities for which he will be remembered.

Rich is survived by his wife, Mary Helffrich, daughter, Stella, and son, Henry. He is further survived by his mother, Teresa Hodges, brother, Stephen and sisters, Patrice Johnson and Sue Cali as well as countless friends and loved ones.

Rest easy, Hodge.
