It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard (Dick) Carey on September 8, 2026.

A lifelong Erieite, Dick lived life to the fullest as an entrepreneur, sportsman, and worldwide traveler. He lived with purpose, generosity, and a genuine appreciation for people and experiences. Through both grand adventures and everyday acts of friendship, he touched countless lives and left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Dick was an avid golfer who enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo—and, after marrying Maureen, Notre Dame. He treasured time with close friends, had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh and make others laugh, and enjoyed a good cigar.

Dick is survived by his wife, Dr. Maureen Barber-Carey; his son, Ryan; his sister, Sheila Layden; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Emmett Carey.

Per Dick’s request, there will be no calling hours, and burial will be private. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to remember Dick may make a memorial donation to the Barber National Institute’s Elizabeth Lee Black School, honoring Maureen’s lifelong personal and professional dedication to children and adults with autism and developmental disabilities.

Though he will be deeply missed, Dick’s memory will remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
