Obituary/Notice
Richard “Dick” Wygant, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 surrounded by family. Born on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th, 1934), he lived his whole life in Erie, PA. He graduated from Academy High School in February of 1952, and remained close with his classmates for many years, often meeting up with them for reunions or meals together. It was during this time that he met his wonderful wife and the love of his life, Mary Ellen. After graduating, Richard served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, aboard the Douglas H. Fox as an RM2. Upon his return in 1957, he and Mary Ellen got married and spent the next 66 years happily together building a beautiful family that he was so very proud of.
Richard worked in the Engineering Department of City Hall for 28 years, retiring in 1994. He also owned M&W Beer Distributor, now known as Elmwood Beer, for several years. Outside of work, he was an avid bowler, golfer, and most importantly, card player. His talent for music was something he loved to share with the world as well. He had a beautiful singing voice that he lent to the St. Luke’s Church choir, where he was an active member, as well as the Maennerchor Choristers. He also taught guitar lessons, and started taking piano lessons in his mid 70s, just because he wanted to learn. Richard was the perfect example of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. Everyone that knew him adored him. He was genuine and kind and, will be remembered by all as such.
Richard is preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert & Delma Bearance Wygant; aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Hamilton Bearance; in-laws, Edward & Marie Dalton; sister-in-law, Dolores “Dodie” Gallagher; brothers-in-law, James Edward Dalton, Jack Gallagher, and Bob Reinwald and his sons, Michael and Christopher Wygant.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Dalton Wygant; his daughter, Linda Wygant Cabell; his granddaughters, Meghan & Sarah Cabell; his sister, Joanie Herzog (Jerry); his sisters-in-law, Lani Reinwald and Joan O’Connor and many beloved nieces and nephews.
