Shortly after marriage, he served in the US Army during the Korean War.  Following the war, he joined the family business, Joseph McCormick Construction Company, and retired in 1999 as President of the company.

John sponsored local sports teams, whether in the Hoyle basketball tournament or baseball teams on the local diamonds. He was a benefactor of the University of Notre Dame and in 1964 was honored as Notre Dame’s “Man of the Year”.

John’s Catholic faith was his top priority and he attended daily mass at St. Peter Cathedral until his health no longer permitted. Because of his faith and the community activities with which he was involved, he received the honor of Knight of St. Patrick from Bishop Michael J. Murphy. John loved his large family and most especially enjoyed taking his grandkids on weekend excursions to see the Cleveland Indians play baseball, stopping on the way at Eddie’s Grill in Geneva on-the-Lake for foot long hotdogs.
