Janet Sekerak Nixon

Janet Rogers Sekerak Nixon, age 99, of Erie, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Forestview Healthcare Center at Springhill.  

She was born on May 17, 1922, in Ochiltree County, Texas, daughter of the late E.W. and Jennie Smith Rogers. Upon the death of her mother, Janet was raised by her loving stepmother, Matie Sowder Rogers.

Jan was a resilient, strong woman who loved her family dearly. She reveled in the time spent at sporting events watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, and playing scrabble and board games with family and friends. She was a fierce competitor! Family gatherings brought her heartfelt joy.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her first husband, John E. Sekerak, Sr.; her beloved second husband, Wilson Nixon; three sisters, Elizabeth Rogers, Margaret McGee (Eakle), and Ruth Anne Rogers; three brothers, Robert (Henri), John and Dean Rogers; one step-sister, Emma Stratford (Robert); and one step-daughter Rebecca Wriker.

Jan is survived by three daughters, Carolyn First (William) of Pleasant Gap, PA, Suzanne Butcher (Larry) of Keene, NH, Martha Lynn (Marty) Manchester (Sid) of Edinboro, PA; her son, John Sekerak, Jr. (Martha) of Montgomery Village, MD; one step-daughter Karen Nixon (Steve); her sister, Katherine Smith; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Collins (Tom), JT Schwartz (Natalie), Lauren Schuttloffel (Matt), Galen Butcher, Bethany Irwin, Brooke Irwin (Ryan), Anne Sekerak, Paige Sekerak; and eleven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Addison, Bradley, Kai, Scarlett, Jack, Sam, Brenden, Parker, Eden, and Declan; and Adelle Clements (Don) as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Jan’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Springhill community for their caring way and, especially, to those at Forestview for all of the care and support offered to her and her family.

A celebration of her life will be held June 172022 with calling from 11 am until the time of the service at noon. A reception to follow at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 4264 Avonia Rd. Fairview.

Memorial contributions may be made in Janet’s honor to the Springhill Resident Benevolent Fund, 2323 Edinboro Rd. Erie, 16509.
