Nancy M. Briggs, age 83, of Erie, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at Springhill. She was born in Kane, PA, on October 13, 1943, a daughter of the late Hubert and Virginia Graham Morrison.
Nancy was a woman of learning, discipline, and deep devotion to the people and the work she loved. She graduated from Smethport High School, Masters Degree from Penn State University, and Doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, building a life centered on education and service to others. She taught early childhood education at Villa Maria College and Edinboro University, where she was known as a dedicated educator who cared deeply that others truly understood what she taught. At Edinboro, she was the field supervisor for pre-student teachers for 22 years. Her field of interest was family literacy, and, in that capacity, she developed the Reading Partners program through which she trained parents how to read aloud to their children. This organization also coordinated student volunteers to read to children at surrounding schools and day care programs. Organized and conscientious in all she did, Nancy was the kind of person who completed her assignments three weeks before they were due, a reflection of the care and commitment she brought to every responsibility.
Nancy’s spare time was spent researching family history for all her own extended family lines as well as that of her husband’s family. She enjoyed communicating with the distant cousins she discovered through her research.
Nancy found lasting joy in time spent with those she loved. For more than 50 years, she, David, and son Matthew, spent summers in Chautauqua, where they learned, relaxed, and made treasured memories among family and friends. Of all the roles she held in life, the one she loved most was being a mother.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her son Matthew, her brother Robert Morrison and her in-laws Bud and Janet Dunning Briggs.
She is survived by her husband, David T. Briggs; her sisters-in-law, Renie S. Morrison, Merrilee A. and Roger C. Hindman and Christine B. and Paul Elbert. She is further survived by her nieces and nephews: Scott Morrison, Rachel Latanich, Jeffrey Morrison, Rachel Elbert Ligattti, Katie Elbert Enos, Daniel Elbert, Andrew Elbert, Michael Hindman and Benjamin Hindman.
