Michael Douglas Chin, age 72, of Girard, Pa., passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at his residence.

He was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on February 1, 1953, a son of Irene Hew and the late Wilfred B. Chin. As a young man, Michael moved to the Erie region, where he built a rich life rooted in music, family, and community.

An accomplished professional musician, Michael made his living through his passion for bass guitar. He was a founding member of Erie's iconic world music band, One World Tribe and known as the “glue” that held the band together. For over 30 years, his infectious rhythms and deep commitment to unity through music brought joy to countless fans across the region and beyond. Blending reggae, funk, Latin, hip-hop, and Afro-beat into unforgettable performances, he helped create a sound that celebrated diversity and connection. His legacy as a founder of One World Tribe will forever echo in Erie, where the band's messages of global harmony inspired generations.

Quiet and introspective by nature, Michael had a gentle way of connecting with others—whether through a shared laugh over a game of pool, a quiet afternoon fishing, or the universal language of his bass lines that drew people together on the dance floor. Michael was a talented visual artist and had a gift for both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design. He was a skilled woodworker and mechanic.

Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Michelle Chin.

He is survived by his son, James R. Gunther-Chin and wife, Hope; sister Angela Chin; three brothers: Phillip, Allan, and Peter Chin; his friend Dorothy; and several nieces and nephews.

A remembrance of his life will be held locally in December in conjunction with his band. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street, Girard.

In lieu of flowers, consider donations to a local Erie music or arts organization in Michael's memory, to keep the spirit of One World Tribe alive.

Rest in rhythm, Michael—your music united us all.
