Laura Bindeman, 52, of Murrells Inlet, SC peacefully and gracefully entered the Gates of Heaven on October 12, 2026 after a short but painful battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Laura was born and raised in Erie, PA where she graduated from East High School in 1992. She earned two Bachelor's Degrees, a BA in Psychology and a BA in Nursing both from Penn State University.
Laura spent fourteen years working as a nurse at UPMC Hamot Medical Center where she brought joy and happiness to both her patients and her co-workers. After spending all those years sharing her upbeat positive attitude with the people in Erie, Laura decided she'd like to see the countryside. She made the exciting choice to become a traveling nurse. Of all the places Laura traveled to, she decided that Arizona was the best. She considered putting down roots there. That decision was sidelined in August, 2025, when she received the devastating diagnosis that she had ALS.
Laura moved to Murrells Inlet, SC so her mother, Joan Bindeman, could provide her the intensive care she would eventually need. While living in Murrells Inlet, Laura made some outstanding friends. Laura did not let her awful disease get her down. She had the best times of her life kayaking; visiting local attractions; going dancing and to the movies; spending time on the beach; going on road trips and receiving excellent chiropractic and medical care from this great group of people who came together and showered her with love. Her new friends gave Laura a chance to live life to its fullest. She was blessed to be surrounded by such loving and caring people.
Through all her trials and tribulations with her disease and with life, Laura maintained an upbeat attitude and always had a big grin on her face - especially if a handsome man was around. Laura battled her disease fiercely and fearlessly but the disease was more powerful than her will to enjoy life.
Laura believed that life was about enjoying the moment. She had a great love for animals and was a doting mother to a number of Bassett Hounds. She loved Dr. Pepper, her music, watching movies, the great outdoors and spending time with friends.
Laura is survived by her mother, Joan (Hartner) Bindeman; her sister, Janice (Bindeman) Innis and her husband Jeffrey Innis; her brother, James Bindeman; her sister, Brenda (Bindeman) Stepniak and her husband Michal Stepniak; her nephews, Matthew Stepniak and Tyler Innis; her niece, Katherine Stepniak along with a host of friends and loved ones.
Laura was greeted in Heaven by her father, Robert L. Bindeman; her brother, Robert J. Bindeman and her nephew, Trevor Innis along with other family and friends.
Viewing will be on Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 am to 12:00 PM at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Wintergreen, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510. A service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel. Burial will then take place at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, 2601 Norcross Rd, Erie, PA 16510.
In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging friends and loved ones to make donations to The ALS Association.
