Joseph R. Niebauer, 84, of Erie, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the son of the late Joseph G. and Laura Schweitzer Niebauer. Joe graduated from McDowell High School and worked for many years at his parents’ family-owned business, Westlake Bakery. He later retired from PennDOT as a heavy equipment operator, operating a Gradall and earning a reputation as a highly skilled operator.

Joe was a man of many talents and passions. A gifted musician, he played in several bands throughout his life and explored a variety of instruments, with drums being his specialty. A natural entertainer, he performed at numerous weddings and, following retirement, shared his musical talents by playing the keyboard at nursing homes.

He was also a talented woodworker, creating beautiful pieces for Asbury House. His love of photography earned him numerous awards for his stunning scenic photographs, and his work was featured multiple times in the Lake Erie calendar. Joe also had a passion for classic cars and always took pride in having beautiful antique cars. Above all, he had a big heart for animals and was a longtime member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his longtime love, Rita Sneary; his granddaughter, Faith Marie Feiler; and his brother-in-law, Donald “Red” Jackson.

He is survived by his three daughters, Jennifer (Paul Fiolek), Janel (Buddy Bonsell), and Jodie Feiler; his grandchildren, Logan Fiolek, Kailynn Fiolek, Brody Bonsell, Summer Feiler, and Travis Feiler; and the mother of his children, Joan Hodges Niebauer. Joan and Joe shared a deep bond as parents to their three daughters and remained close friends throughout the years. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Jackson, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Hamot Medical Center, especially John Barnett, of Palliative Care, as well as the many nurses, doctors, and especially Jess the RN who took care of him with us the last hours. All of these people showed our family compassion, kindness, and sympathy during this difficult time.

Calling hours will be held at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc, West Ridge on Monday, October 19th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a private Mass and burial at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Orphan Angels 5439 W. Lake Rd, Erie, PA 16505 or to an animal shelter of your choice in Joe’s memory.
