John Dewayne Hogue, age 86, a resident of Erie, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2025 after a lengthy hospital stay at UPMC Hamot. He was born on October 5, 1938 in Oil City, PA the son of the late Carl and Lillian (Strain Sweeney) Hogue.

John was a veteran of the 11th Artillery, Third US Army where he served as a mechanic & rifle specialist. He retired from Erie’s General Electric plant where he worked as a welder. Even after he retired, he worked at The Cake Carriage and Trost & Steinfurth Florist where he loved delivering cakes and flowers to people. He loved meeting new people, getting to talk to them, and putting smiles on their faces with his deliveries.

John was truly at home in nature. He enjoyed feeding the birds, watching the rabbits and squirrels play in his yard and going to the peninsula with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He became friends with every dog he ever met. He loved scenic drives, hunting and fishing with his friends and son. He also loved trips to the zoo with his daughters and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his devoted wife of almost 65 years, Grace (Nelson) Hogue who died on April 17, 2025. A brother Carl M. Jr on August 2, 2006 & his wife Barbara (Schneider) Hogue on September 11, 2017. His close and loving mother-in-law Pearl (Mester) Nelson on September 30, 2020.

John is survived by his children: Gary Hogue and his wife Angela of Corry, PA; Brenda Hogue of Erie; and Lisa George of Chesterland, OH. He is the proud grandfather of Allison and Natalie George.

Dad, you may not have been able to go home, but now you are home and reunited with mom.

There will be no visitation and services will be private.
