Jerome D. Hughes

January 26, 1936 — February 9, 2024

Jerome D. "Jerry" Hughes, 88, of Erie, died February 9, 2024 at St. Vincent AHN.

He was born in Erie on January 26, 1936, the son of the late Thomas "Tim" Hughes and Margaret Wingerter Hughes.

Jerry grew up on Erie's east side, attending St. Patrick School and Cathedral Prep.  After participating in ROTC, he graduated from Gannon College and was assigned to Ft. Richardson in Anchorage, AK, with his new bride, Maureen O'Shaughnessy.

Upon returning to Erie, he began working in sales at Fenestra Corporation, eventually becoming Chief Executive.  After retirement, he consulted for PSB Industries and other local businesses.

Jerry loved his family, friends and work colleagues and savored his time in their company.  Throughout his life, he was a prolific storyteller and an avid Notre Dame and Cleveland baseball fan.  As a young man, Jerry participated in whatever sport was in season.  As an adult, he enjoyed playing golf, handball and racquetball.  Lately, his favorite position was on the couch, watching his favorite teams play.  He particularly enjoyed his monthly meeting with the "Corps of '54," his Prep classmates.  He was an active member of St. Jude Church, serving on Parish Council and regularly attending mass throughout the week.

He was a former member of the Sacred Heart Ushers Club, the Maennerchor Club, and the Sportsman's Club.  He was also a longtime season-ticket holder for Gannon basketball.

He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas P. Hughes and his wife Jean, his sister Mary Margaret Wolfe and her husband Whitey, and his sister Patsy Kelleher and her husband Dan.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maureen.  He is also survived by his son Kevin (Francy) Hughes of Cincinnati, his daughter Katy (Greg) Hines of Cleveland and Erie, his daughter Kerry Hughes of Pittsburgh and Erie, and his son Chris Hughes of Erie.  He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Jerry's niece, Amy Wolfe Fatica, for her consistent and compassionate care and support over the years.
