Janet Ann (Brown) Cooney, 91, resident of Erie, PA, beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend, died May 3, 2025. Janet was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Conneaut, OH, to F. Rowland and Clara Brown. Janet was raised on her family farm in Van, PA, which she fondly recalled throughout her last years.
After high school, she attended and graduated from St. Vincent Nursing School in Erie, PA. Janet then met and married Richard A. Cooney and together they raised seven children. She returned to St. Vincent Hospital and worked as a registered nurse until she retired.
Janet loved to garden, sew, bake, and was a great cook. She had a great love of music and was a regular patron of the Erie Philharmonic. Janet also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Janet is survived by six of her children: Mary (Gregory) Crandall, Patricia Cooney (Chip Messenkopf), Margaret Jean (Byron) Baker, Sarah (David) Scott, John (Maureen) Cooney, and Janet (Michael) Westcott, 19 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, with another on the way, and a host of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard, her son Richard W, granddaughter Addeline Baker, parents, sister, and brothers.
Visitation will be held at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc, West Ridge , 3801 W. 26th St, Erie PA on Thursday, May 8th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, May 9th at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church 2801 W. 6th St., Erie PA from 9:00 a.m until the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Janet will be laid to rest with her husband and son at Trinity Cemetery in Erie.
