James G. Hawes, age 69, of Erie, passed away Monday, June 2, 2025. He was born in Erie, September 5, 1955, to the late James E. and Phyllis J. Hawes.
Jimmy graduated from Fairview High School, class of 1974, and attended Mercyhurst College. He was an extremely talented artist and cabinet maker who took his crafts very seriously. He once moved to the country for a year and a half and studied the Color Grid. He then studied pointillism and created beautiful paintings in oil and pastels. He was recognized for his creative woodworking and won first place at the Villa Art festival for an eclectic coffee table made of Cypress and made several custom cabinets and pieces of furniture for the Erie community. In his later years, he loved filming local bands and loved “the X Whites” and actually produced a film about them. He was active in the Erie Art scene. He also loved playing the lottery numbers.
Jimmy is survived by his sister, Christianne Brooks and her husband Michael of Erie, and a brother Gregory G. Hawes of Erie. He is further survived by his nephew Trevor Hawes (Midland, Texas), and his nieces Emily Brooks (Los Angeles, CA) and Michaela Baldwin and her husband Scott of Erie.
Friends are invited to a graveside service on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Laurel Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th Street, Erie.
