Henry Hamilton Mayer Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026 in Kilmarnock, Virginia. Henry was born on March 6, 1935, in Erie, PA, to Henry and Lois Mayer. He was predeceased by his parents, and his son Henry (“Hank”) H. Mayer III.

Henry is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Miller, his son Thomas S. Mayer and his wife Laura, and their children Liam (Luke) and Danny, and his daughter-in-law Sallie, and their children Henry and Lillie.

After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1954, Henry earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University in 1958. He remained an avid student of history, especially family history, for the rest of his life.

Henry began his professional career at the American Meter Company. He also worked for Union Bank before he retired as a Vice President at Mellon Bank in 1985. After his retirement, he worked for Mercyhurst University as the director of facilities served on the board of the Erie Cemetery.

He married Dorothy (Dede) Mayer in 1964. They were married for 33 years and raised two sons, Hank and Tom in Erie, PA. In 2006, Henry moved to Ashland, Virginia and later to Richmond to be near his sons and their families.

Throughout his life, he remained closely connected with his longtime friends from Erie and Princeton. He enjoyed working in the yard, being outdoors, tinkering with his 1924 Model T and a good, home-cooked, meat and potatoes meal.

He will be missed by his family and friends.

Services are private with burial in Erie Cemetery.
