Harjinder Singh Sabherwal, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 30, 2026. He was born in New Delhi, India, one of eight siblings in a loving vibrant family.
With a thirst for adventure and a drive to always strive for more, Harjinder came to the United States in 1970, eventually making his home in Erie, Pennsylvania. Like many immigrants of his generation, he set out to build a better life for his young family. After a year of hard work on the General Electric locomotive assembly line, he formed a partnership with a local optometrist as an optician at Rite Sight Optical. He went on to own the business outright for over 50 years, and it became a successful and well-known part of the community. He loved his customers, and they loved him.
His remarkable life journey is best told through the many memories he leaves with family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Bajinder Sabherwal; his sons, Dr. Ravi Sabherwal (Shellie) and Jeet Sabherwal (Lydia Secara); his grandchildren, Dr. Ryan Sabherwal (Dr. Mona Kansagra), Niven Sabherwal (Katie Blackley), and Neena Sabherwal (Louis Weyand); and his great-grandchildren, Luca and Leo Sabherwal, whose names or sight alone lit up his face with a smile. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family members across the United States and India, all of whom regarded him as their loving patriarch. We would be remiss not to recognize our cousin Beenu Kohli, who came to visit us from India on vacation but selflessly stepped in to provide extraordinary love and support over the past few weeks. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our parents’ caregivers, especially Kathy Marinock, whose compassion, expertise, and leadership made her a trusted source of guidance and someone our parents cherished like a daughter. The family would also like to recognize and appreciate Gurleen Kaur, Jen Quinn, Hannah Challis, Omayra Rodriguez, and Sadie Malcolm for their kindness and dedication.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate his life and legacy at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc., 3801 West 26th St. (at Powell Ave.), on Saturday, November 21, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society of Erie or to any local food pantry. Send condolences at www.BurtonQuinnScott.com.
