It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Gerald “Jay” Mackay, age 61, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the LECOM Presque Isle Nursing Home following a courageous two-year struggle with a rare brain disease.
Jay was the best husband and friend anyone could have. He was truly loved by so many. His passions were golfing, hunting and fishing in that order.
Jay graduated from McDowell High School and later received his Middle Atlantic Professional Golf Association (MAPGA) status. After high school, he moved to Potomac, MD where he worked as an Assistant Pro at Falls Road Golf Course.
Jay retired from Erie County Courthouse in February of 2024 after 20 years of dedicated service as a loyal and hardworking member of the Maintenance Department. He was known for always asking how others were doing and for remembering what was happening in their lives—small gestures that meant so much to so many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and Andrew Mackay and his sister, Andrea Mackay.
He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Monahan Mackay, with whom he shared eight wonderful years; his cherished son, Steven (Lydia Jines)—the happiest day of Jay’s life was the day Steven was born; his sister, Denise (Jerry) Schwab; his brother, Chuck (Desiree) Mackay of West Virginia; his in-laws, Gary and Connie Monahan; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and caregivers who took exceptional care of Jay and truly loved him. They always greeted us with smiles and hugs, which meant more than words can express.
A funeral service will be held April 26, 2026 at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc, West Ridge 3801 W. 26th Street with details to follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, to honor Jay please donate to VNA Wings of Hope, 2253 W Grandview, Erie , Pa 16506 Or charity of your choice.
