George Russell Makay passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born on April 12, 1956, to the late Andrew and Margaret (Kohler) Makay.
A lifelong resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, George graduated from McDowell High School in 1974 and shortly after began a career at the local General Electric plant as a member of UE Local 506, where he would work for 42 years.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend of many, he was also a devoted pet parent to a number of dogs over his years, including his current two, Sophie and Libby. He enjoyed riding his motorcycles, following the various professional teams from Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh, and Penn State football. He also took pride in his yardwork and having the family pool feeling like “bath water” when visitors would stop by.
George was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Margaret, his brother Andrew Makay, sisters Mary Makay, Sue Makay and Carol Lewis (Michael). He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharon (Johnson) Makay, their son Jason Makay (Heather) and grandchildren Lily and Jameson, and his niece Trudy Malecki, who he loved like a daughter, her husband Arthur Malecki and their six children, Anabella, Trent, Jayden, Janelle, Abigail and Gavin. George also leaves behind his sister Debra Harris (Phil) and brother Michael Makay (Beth), along with a number of loving nieces and nephews.
Considered by many to be an extremely hard worker who would rarely ask for help, he was always willing to offer his help to anyone in need.
