George T. Abowd, Sr., age 94, of Fairview, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 25, 2026, at his home with his family close by.
Born in Fostoria, Ohio, he was the son of the late Richard and Alice Elum Abowd.
George graduated from St. Wendelin High School and later from John Carrol University earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. During college he participated in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and after graduation he served as an officer in the United States Army.
Following his honorable discharge from military service, George and his new bride Mary, moved back to Fostoria, Ohio where he began his business career at the Seneca Wire Corporation while also helping his parents run the family business, the New Ohio Hotel. In 1970, they left Ohio and George started a new position in Erie, Pennsylvania with the Patterson-Erie Corporation serving as Vice President and Treasurer. He worked there for 54 years until his retirement at age 92.
George’s work ethic and independence were evident early in life. At the age of 12, while working at the New Ohio Hotel, he obtained his driver’s license and kept driving until the age 92. He favored Mercurys and Cadillacs. In grade school he won the penmanship award one year with his left hand and the next year with his right. He was extremely patient and could fix anything around the house.
He was an active member at Lake Shore Country Club for over 50 years where he enjoyed entertaining family and friends and playing tennis into his eighties. He also enjoyed eating and interacting with staff at all his favorite local restaurants, particularly the Colony Pub & Grille.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Vincent Abowd (2011); his daughter, Teresa Abowd (2010); and his siblings Richard Abowd, Jr. (Sara), Philip Abowd (Virginia), Margaret Shaker (Simon), Patricia Saker (Theodore) and Mary Alice Abood (Camille). He is survived by his brother Thomas Abowd (Anne Marie) and many devoted nieces and nephews.
He leaves behind a loving family: George T. Abowd, Jr. (Christine) of Albany, NY, Edward V. Abowd of Pittsburgh, Timothy T. Abowd (Maria Victoria) of Plymouth, MI, James P. Abowd (Denine) of Pinckney, MI, and Michael J. Abowd (Aimee) of Ann Arbor, MI. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Laurel, Thomas, Allyson, Patrick, Gabriel, Austin and Nicolas and 1 great-granddaughter, Sophia.
The Abowd family is grateful to George’s devoted caregivers and the compassionate team at AseraCare Hospice.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration of life mass on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church 7100 West Ridge Rd, Fairview, PA 16415. Inurnment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc, West Ridge 3801 W. 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506.
