Gail Johnson went home with the Lord on May 21, 2025, at the age of 86, after a battle with kidney failure.
She was born on July 6, 1938, in Homewood, Illinois, a daughter of the late Henry and Dorothy Kaster VanDerGriend.
A devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Gail served as a past deacon. She was known for her deep affection for animals and genuine love for life. She enjoyed watching auto racing, game shows, and, in her younger years, spent many hours sewing. Her greatest treasures were her family. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gail valued relationships and was always eager to meet new faces and engage in meaningful conversations.
In addition to her parents, Gail is preceded in death by her very loving husband, Edward E. Johnson Sr.; son James A. Johnson who was murdered in 1987 and her brother Robert VanDerGriend.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, six children: Bonnie Jean Johnson, Edward E. Johnson, Jr., Jessie M. Johnson, Debbie Johnson, Dorothy Coleman (Alfonzo) and Ruth Ann Johnson; 16 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. She is further survived by special friends she considered family: Holly, Ven, Joe, Austin, Alec, Faye and many others.
Friends are invited to call at Burton Quinn-Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 W 10th Street, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 11:00 am until time of service at 1:00 pm. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
