Eta J. Landberg Howell, Hunt Community, of 10 Allds St. Nashua, NH 03060, died on October 9th, 2026.
Devoted mother, wife, grandparent, and great granparent.
She was born in Erie on August 10, 1931, the daughter of the late Meyer and Ida Landberg.
She was a 1950 graduate of Academy High School in Erie, PA, attended Penn State Erie-the Behrend College and graduated from Penn State University in 1955 receiving her B.A. in Social Work.
Eta and her mother operated the Fashion Shoppe, a ladies and children’s store in Wesleyville, PA. She later worked for General Telephone, Marine Bank, owned and operated London’s store for women’s clothing and specialty shoppes. She later worked for the Margarite Flood and Chameleon Shoppes, which also were women’s clothing and specialty shoppes. She served as personal clothing advisor for senior women in Erie, PA,
Eta was well-known as a “people-person” among her family, friends, and colleagues. She was extremely active in her Temple Anshe Hesed congregation on its Board of Directors, Caring Committee chair, and became President of the Temple Sisterhood. Her work included “next-to-new” sales, bake sales, and made deliveries to people in need. As a member of the “mahjettes,” a mahjong club, she conducted classes in the art of playing Mahjong. Always concerned about finding a purpose in life, she often asked, “How can I help?” She was a member of Hadassah, the Council of Jewish Women, and on the Board of the Jewish Community Council of Erie.
In addition to her Temple activities, she volunteered at the Blasco Library Gift Shop, the Erie School District’s S.E.R.V.E. Program at Jefferson Elementary School, the American Red Cross, and she was one of the original volunteers for the Stairways Behavioral Agency.
To her family and close friends, she became known as the “brownie and chocolate chip cookie lady.” She enjoyed writing letters, reading, and scrapbooking.
Eta was well-known for her devotion to her husband David, whom she married on May 6, 1956; to her children, Claudia Tarr of Westford, MA and Bradley Howell and his wife, Laura of Haverhill, MA. David and Eta are also grandparents of Benjamin Tarr of Herndon, VA, and Adam Tarr, and his wife, Saachi, and their children, Sia and Ari, all of West Hartford, CT, and Joshua Howell, of Salem, NH and Isaac Howell of Haverhill, MA.
Eta was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Freitag and her husband, Hervin.
In addition to her husband, children, grandsons, and great grandchildren, she is survived by two nieces, Ellen Franklin and her husband Steve, and Carol Halpin and her husband Bill and their son Andy, all of California, and several cousins.
Friends are invited to attend a service at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. West Ridge, 3801 W. 26th St., Erie, PA, at 11am on October 14th. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Erie, PA on October 14th.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Caring Fund at Temple Anshe Hesed, 5410 Old Zuck Road, Erie, PA16506 or to the charity of one’s choice.
