Edward (Eddie) LaCastro, age 82, of Albion, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 8, 1942, in Erie, PA, he was the eldest son of the late Anthony Sr. and Jean (Szewczyk) LaCastro.
Eddie was a 1960 graduate of Cathedral Prep and went on to attend Gannon University.
He worked for many years at LaCastro Plastics in Erie and later for over 15 years with the EMTA Lift Division. During his time at EMTA, Eddie formed special bonds with many of the people he served, always going the extra mile to make others feel cared for and supported. He was an active member of his community, volunteering with the Kearsarge Rotary Club of Erie and the Albion Area Lions Club. Eddie also had a deep love for sports, serving as a longtime umpire and member of the American Softball Association of Erie County and coaching Little League. A true sports enthusiast, Eddie found great joy in both playing and watching sports. Whether cheering on his beloved New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Cathedral Prep or supporting his children at Northwestern High School, Eddie’s enthusiasm was unmatched—you always knew when he was in the stands. Known for his warm personality and infectious sense of humor, Eddie greeted everyone with love, laughter, and his trademark catchphrase: “What’s happening? YOU’RE happening!” His quick wit and memorable sayings will continue to live on through his family and friends. He had a passion for old westerns, war movies, and oldies music. Eddie also had a few simple pleasures that brought him great joy, like washing his car and always wearing his signature sunglasses—rain or shine. Above all, Eddie’s greatest love was his family. He adored spending time with his children and grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Pop Pop.” His pride in them was evident in everything he did.
Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Patty (O’Brien) LaCastro, and their three children: Meghan Parrish (Keith) of Fairview, PA; Michael LaCastro of Albion, PA; and Molly LaCastro (Ian Chiesa) of Erie, PA. He is also survived by his eldest daughter Maria Taraszkiewicz (Joe) of Leesburg, VA; sons Anthony Scarpelli (Mary Ann) of Erie, PA; Edward Scarpelli of Erie, PA; Christian LaCastro (Abbey) of Cary, NC; and Matthew LaCastro of Erie, PA. He is further survived by his brother Anthony “Tyker” LaCastro (Ruth Ann), sister Diane LaCastro, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren: Arianna, Aluna, Nico, Quinn, Jordan, Noah, Devin, Will, and Cecilia. Eddie’s strength, determination, and courage—especially during his long and brave battle with cancer—continue to inspire all who knew him. He was a fighter to the very end. May he rest in peace. His long journey is now complete. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the AseraCare Hospice team for their compassionate care, especially Dar, Katie, Aslan, Brei, Stacey, Amber, Paula, and Kym.
