Douglas Hewitt

June 7, 1936 — September 29, 2022

Douglas J. Hewitt age 86, of Erie, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at St. Vincent Hospital.

He was born in Erie on June 7, 1936, the son of the late Ward G. and Edith Eldred Hewitt.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Louise Seifreit Hewitt and Lenny the Cat; five children, Jennifer Steinke, Lori Kleiner (Jason), Julie Jones (Ed), Jeffrey Pollock and Scott Dumeyer (Tanya); seven grandchildren, Brandon Walter, Cody Held, Shea van den Bergh, Kait Kowach, Kacie Zadorozny, Jeffrey Pollock Jr., Kaylah Pollock; and five great grandchildren, Ella, Paisleigh, Gavin, Jaxon and Jolene.

Doug graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1954 and Gannon College in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Management. He went on to serve in the United States Navy honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant.

He enjoyed a long career managing the offices for Hobart Corporation and Carnation Company in Erie, as well as the Sinclair Refinery. Co and BP Oil.

Doug was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed spending time with family and close friends that included weekly dinners out and a good competitive game of marbles.  He loved to stay active and busy building model planes and ships, as well as playing chess, cards and board games. He volunteered his time to several organizations including the Veterans Miracle Center, the Regional Cancer Center and the VA Medical Center.

He was a very loving and thoughtful man who was always helping others and looking after his family, especially his wife, Louise, the love of his life.  He was true to his vows of in sickness and health, doting over Louise during her own health challenges.  Ensuring she always had whatever she needed and wanted. 

He was a member of the Fairview American Legion Post # 742 and was an active member at Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for several years and was chairman of the building and grounds committee.

The family welcomes friends to call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, West Ridge, 3801 W. 26th Street on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Humane Society 2407 Zimerly Rd, Erie, PA 16506 or Veterans Miracle Center 1573 W 39th St, Erie, PA 16509.
