Corrine (Gordon) Halperin Egan (2-8-1936 – 6-1-2026)
Born in Providence, RI and raised in Detroit, MI, Corrine and family finally settled in Erie, PA in 1970. She immediately fell in love with her new hometown and resided in Erie for the remainder of her life.
Always civic minded and generous, Corrine became a well-known and highly respected part of the Erie community. She served as a founder and Executive Director of Council On Volunteers of Erie (COVE) where she met her second husband, the late Leo W. Egan. She also served as Executive Director of the YWCA of Erie where she was the visionary behind multiple innovative programs serving the community, with a focus on working women and the underprivileged. She was Executive Director of the American Cancer Society, Erie Chapter. As Executive Director of the Erie County Labor-Management Council, she worked with private businesses to improve management/labor relations, in some cases helping to avoid costly work outages. She was Coordinator of Mercyhurst College’s Adult Education Program and earned her Bachelors Degree from Mercyhurst. Never one to “retire”, Corrine worked with the Jefferson Educational Society (JES) into her 80’s where she created the Remarkable Women Program, facilitated education workshops and playing a lead role in planning Erie’s Perry 200 Celebration.
Corrine dedicated herself to helping professional women thrive in Erie and was an advocate for the rights of women and children through her extensive charitable work. She was a founding member of the Women's Roundtable (formerly Erie 80) and in 1993 was named that Organization’s “Woman of the Year”. She served as President of Temple Anshe Hesed, President of Temple Anshe Hesed Sisterhood and President of AAUW, Erie Chapter. She was a charter member of the Board of Directors for Hospitality House of Erie – one of the first Domestic Violence shelters in Pennsylvania.
As her working life wound down, she was recognized in 1989 – at age 83 – by St. Mary’s Home of Erie as an “Ageless Remarkable Erieite”.
She attended University of Michigan and became a life-long Michigan fan, especially for football. She was at her happiest whenever the Wolverines beat Ohio State.
Her strength, generosity and humor were a blessing to all who knew her. She was an avid reader and never stopped learning (a value she passed along to her children). In fact, in 1966 Corrine was a one-day champion on the show “Jeopardy!” .
She is survived by her sister, Esta Bloom; her children Karen Halperin Shor, Michael Halperin (Mary) and Amy Halperin (Barbara); her granddaughters Jessica Nichter (David) and Sarah Halperin Diperna (Jarrett) as well as her sisters-in-law: Shelly Taylor, Debra Biasca (Franck), Ellen Higdon(Dennis) and Marjorie Halperin-Robinson (Alan) as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Temple Anshe Hesed, 5401 Old Zuck Rd., Erie PA 16506; the Jefferson Educational Society, 3207 State St., Erie, PA 16508 or the charity of your choice.
A remembrance service will be held at a later date. Private arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn-Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Inc.
