Bertine Zelia Leatherwood Hamilton

February 26, 1937 — January 29, 2024

Bertine Zelia (Leatherwood) Hamilton, 86, passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, surrounded by family on Monday, January 29, 2024.

She was born on February 26, 1937, to the late Benjamin Newton Leatherwood and Zelia “Mary” Foote Leatherwood.

Bertine was a graduate of Academy High School and studied nursing prior to starting her family. She worked for Erie Technological for years before joining General Electric as a small parts assembler. As a member and Deaconess of Second Baptist Church, she served for decades on several auxiliaries and ministries, including the management of the food bank for Second Harvest of Northwest Pennsylvania.

Bertine (Bert) was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and L.A. Lakers. She enjoyed reading, watching history documentaries and old B/W movies, as well as fishing. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be sorely missed by all.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Catherine Mae Leatherwood Young and Helene Cooper; Monica Elaine (first- born daughter), a son, Lavon Anthony and grandson, Lavon Anthony, Jr.

Bertine leaves to cherish her in memory, her husband of 67 years, Willie Hamilton, Jr.; her five surviving children, Darlene George (Marietta, GA), Dewayne Hamilton (Dayton, OH), Deborah Wilcox (Dallas, GA), Cynthia Hamilton (Clearwater, FL) and Monica Hamilton (Cincinnati, OH); seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one great-great grandson along with a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Friends may call at Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th Street, Erie, PA 16504, on Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. which will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/BurtonQuinnScott/. Interment will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens, 7880 Edinboro Road.
