Barbara "Barb" Sult

Barbara “Barb” (Scherrer) Sult, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. She was born on July 1, 1930, the daughter of Andrew and Selma Scherrer of Erie.

Barbara was a 1948 graduate of Strong Vincent High School. She met her husband, Glenn, at their favorite hang out, “The Bean Pot” in Erie. They were married on August 26, 1950. Together they went on to build an amazing and ambitious life. Her loving husband preceded her in death on August 29, 1996, at the young age of 65.

During their life together, they owned and operated Sult’s Motorcycle Sales and Services, where Barb learned to love riding motorcycles. They also owned Erie Travel Trailer Center. Barb loved camping on the weekends with their many friends from The Holiday Rambler Club. After closing the trailer business, Barb and her husband started a family trucking company, Sult’s Trucking. She went on to learn how to drive the 18 wheelers and tag-team drove with her husband up and down the east coast and across the country to California and back. Barb also held several jobs on her own. She worked at the telephone company in the billing department right out of high school, she enjoyed working at the Pie Factory, and spent a few years at Spectrum Control. Barb was also quite the car enthusiast. She owned a metallic, lime green street dune buggy, a 1965 Corvette that she fixed up on her own, and a 1975 show Corvette. She really enjoyed driving all of them!

Barb loved getting on the big farm tractors and mowing much of their 120 acre homestead out in Franklin Center. There she took up horseback riding and owned 2 horses, Big Mac and Chocolate. She also loved going to all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. Whenever family came out to visit, she would get them together for a good card game. You always knew that when you showed up at grandma's house, you could count on a few things, depending on what you were looking for; a couch to just rest and maybe take a quick nap, food for a hungry belly, a fun game with grandma, or just some good conversation. Her favorite TV entertainment was watching her Cleveland Indians. She knew all of their batting averages and who was pitching that day. She attended several games in Cleveland and was just thrilled to be there.

Barb was quite the baker. She was known for 2 items in particular. She was the pie maker of the family. Every holiday required at least 3 different pies for the family. She also enjoyed giving them to others, always making sure that her dear hairdresser, Georgie, received one every year for Christmas. And then there were the Christmas cookies. She would bake multiple dozens of anise flavored cut out cookies and round up all of her grandkids and daughters-in-law to sit and decorate them. It was a favored tradition every year.

Barb was also a very crafty person. She enjoyed spending many hours creating ceramic pieces with great detail. She owned her own kiln, so production was always ongoing. She also loved doing puzzles. Her table was never without one that was in full swing. In her most recent years, she got into creating extravagant paint by number pictures. She would spend hours filling in the tiniest little numbered specks with beautiful colors. The painted pictures and framed puzzles hung on the walls of her most recent residences.

Barb spent 15 years at Saint Joseph Apartments where she acquired many friends. She loved playing bingo on Monday and Wednesday evenings there, always hoping to win the big pot of nickels. She also enjoyed the many card games that her gang on the third floor would get going. Her friends would always come to her room to let her know it was time to play. Every Christmas she would make her pizzelles and the aroma would fill the hallways there. Everyone would look forward to their gifted bags of pizzelles from baker Barb.

Barb and Glenn had 3 children: Mark Sult (Debbie), Diane Faber (Chuck Perrotta), and James Sult, who passed July 24, 2009 (Leslie Sult).

They were blessed with 9 grandchildren: Michele Sult, Jeremy Sult, Kelly Ransom (Jeffrey), Kelsey Garcia Faber (Andres), TJ Faber (Melissa), Glen Sult (Danelle), Staci Sult (Davor), Kevin Sult (Marissa) and Kyle Sult; four great grandchildren: James Daniel Sult, Thomas Michael Sult, Adaline Simone Faber, and Emmalia Rose Garcia Faber.

Besides her husband, Glenn, and her son, James, Barbara was preceded in death by her sister Geraldine Nelson and her three brothers: Richard Scherrer, Andrew Scherrer and Dennis Scherrer.

This “spirited” lady will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Friends are invited to call at Burton Quinn-Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 West 10th Street, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. A 12:00 pm gathering will take place there on Wednesday followed by burial in Erie County Memorial Gardens.
