Albert “Al” Policano, 86, of Fairview, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by all his children on January 18, 2026.
A devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Al will be remembered as a man whose love of flight mirrored his approach to life—steady, purposeful, and dedicated. Born on May 17, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Madeline Policano, He attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School in Brooklyn and later graduated from Kearny High School in New Jersey, where his methodical nature and ambition became evident to all who knew him.
Al’s fascination with aviation began early. By the age of sixteen, he had already earned his pilot’s license. His professional life took flight when he began working as a pilot with Zantop, later joining Allegheny Airlines in 1964, retiring after 30 years with what became US Airways. Outside of the cockpit, Al’s passion for sailing brought him to Erie, Pennsylvania. He had many hobbies throughout his life, including building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, cycling, cross-country skiing, photography and participating in biathlons. He was also an avid guitarist, and United States history enthusiast. He enjoyed sharing his passions with his family most of all. A devoted member of the Catholic Church, Al lived his faith quietly but consistently. Al is survived by his children Robert M. Policano, Albert V. Policano, Jennifer S. Ellis, Daniel J. Policano (Nicole), and Julie A. Policano (Chris Freed); and his sister, Rosie Filipone. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan L. Policano; his brother, Vincent Policano; and his parents, Joseph and Madeline Policano. He cherished his grandchildren Sabrina, Joey, Michael, Madeline, Joseph, Charlotte, Angelina, James, Nathan, Filip and Cora; and four great-grandchildren.
Albert “Al” Policano’s life was a journey marked by purpose, faith, and flight—a life that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
